GODS

THE EGYPTIANS HAD MANY HUNDREDS OF GODS

They were represented as humans, animals or humans with animal heads.

The greatest of them all was Re, the Sun God. He was a falcon or a man with a falcon’s head. By day he sailed across the sky in his boat, and by night his journey took him through the underworld where he shone for the dead.

It was the duty of Pharaoh to provide for the gods. Here we see Ptolemy II (285-246 BC.) presenting an offering of eye make-up to Re, who is enthroned in front of him.

See Re and many other Egyptian gods in the Glyptotek’s Egyptian rooms, 1-4.
