The J.C. Jacobsen Family Archive contains a variety of documents originally belonging to the founder of the Carlsberg Breweries, J.C. Jacobsen, as well as from his relatives, especially his son Carl Jacobsen, who was the founder of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek.

THE JACOBSEN FAMILY AT CARLSBERG
It is unusual for a father to name his company after his young son. That is, however, what brewing magnate J.C. Jacobsen did when he called his brewery Carlsberg.
J.C. Jacobsen moved his brewery from inner Copenhagen out to the suburb of Valby. Here he built a brewery and a villa decorated with Pompeian wall paintings and adorned with sculptures by Bertel Thorvaldsen.
When he reached adulthood Carl Jacobsen built his own brewery, Ny Carlsberg ,next to his father’s and they became rivals. Carl Jacobsen lived with his wife Ottilia and their children at Gammel Bakkegaard next to the rapidly growing brewery. It was here he opened his first museum to the public in 1882.
In 1890 Bakkegaarden had to be demolished and Jacobsen built a modern villa and expanded his private museum several times.
