RENOVATION AT THE NY CARLSBERG GLYPTOTEK

The collection of Danisg Golden Age art at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen is open once more following a period of building renovation.

Now the light from the Winter Garden streams into the exhibition rooms, where its warmth combines with the view of the palm trees to create an exotic atmosphere. At the same time the new heating system makes sure that the public can enjoy the visit in a temperate climate.

The entire Golden Age collection has been re-hung. With the question “A Flawless World? The Danish Golden Age at the Glyptotek” the exhibition focuses on 19th century Danish art and the sources of its inspiration: from dreams of the art of Antiquity to the idea of landscape as a national romantic epic.

The Glyptotek’s Golden Age art meets works and objects from the museum’s Collection of Antiquities – the largest in Northern Europe – to show the power contemporary thought about Antiquity had for the artists of all Europe, Denmark too. The development of landscape painting can be traced from Juel and Dahl to Eckersberg, Skovgaard and Lundbye. The renovation has been financed by the Ny Carlsberg Foundation and is the work of architect Dan Ljungar in concert with Kulturarvsstyrelsen.
